FBT Key Dates

The FBT year runs 1 April to 31 March — out of sync with the financial year, which is exactly why its deadlines get missed.

DateWhat
31 MarchFBT year ends — measure car odometers, log books, benefit records
21 MayFBT return and payment due if you lodge yourself. Also the deadline to be added to a tax agent's FBT client list for the later date
25 JuneTypical due date when lodging electronically through a tax agent

If you provide cars, car parking, entertainment, loans or expense reimbursements to employees (including directors), you may have an FBT obligation even if no FBT is payable — many employers lodge a nil return or keep records proving no liability. Talk to your adviser before 21 May.
