The 7 ATO requirements for a tax invoice
A valid tax invoice for sales under $1,000 must show: (1) that the document is intended as a tax invoice — the words "Tax invoice"; (2) the seller's identity; (3) the seller's ABN; (4) the date; (5) a brief description of each item sold, including quantity and price; (6) the GST amount payable, or a statement such as "Total includes GST"; and (7) the extent to which each sale is taxable. For sales of $1,000 or more, add (8) the buyer's identity or ABN. Invoices must be legible and typed — the NDIA and many payers no longer accept handwritten invoices.
FAQ
What must an Australian tax invoice include?
For sales under $1,000: the words 'Tax invoice', the seller's identity and ABN, the invoice date, a description of items (with quantity and price), the GST amount (or a statement that the total includes GST), and the extent to which each item is taxable. Sales of $1,000 or more must also show the buyer's identity or ABN.
Do I need to charge GST on my invoices?
Only if you're registered for GST (required once your GST turnover reaches $75,000). If you're not registered, you issue regular invoices — not tax invoices — and must not charge GST.
Is this invoice generator really free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser — your invoice data never leaves your device, and we don't store it. Use it as often as you like.
Can I save my details for next time?
Yes — your business details are saved in your own browser (local storage), so they're prefilled next visit on the same device.
